Women in India are scaling new heights. Not only are they breaking the corporate ladder and reaching top management positions but also many of them are successful entrepreneurs. Here are 4 female Indian entrepreneurs who have carved a niche for themselves.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw

The founder and the Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon, one of the largest biopharmaceutical companies in India. Shaw holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Bangalore University and masters in Brewing and Malting from Melbourne University. Subsequently, she worked with various brewing companies in Australia. She returned to India and founded Biocon in 1978 as a company that manufactured industrial enzymes. Biocon is now a pharmaceutical company with a keen focus on research in treatments for diabetes and Cancer. Shaw was awarded Padma Shri in 1989 and Padma Bhushan in 2005.

Vandana Luthra

Vandana Luthra converted her passion for beauty and fitness into a full-fledged business. Her VLCC brand now has a presence in several companies in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. She has pursued her education in New Delhi, France, the UK, and Germany. Luthra started the company in 1989 and has made the company a global brand. Products of VLCC are among the top cosmetic products in India. For her contribution to the business, Luthra was awarded Padma Shri in 2013. Fortune magazine also listed her as the 33rd most influential businesswoman in the country in 2015.

Ekta Kapoor

Satellite television channels have emerged as the most powerful sources of entertainment in India. If one person who can be termed as the most successful entertainment industry entrepreneur, it is Ekta Kapoor. She realised the potential of this medium in the 1990s and has made a strong television franchise in the form of Balaji Telefilms. Ekta Kapoor has created an independent identity for herself in the Indian television industry and has also produced several Bollywood movies, for which she has received numerous awards.

Suchi Mukherjee

LimeRoad, which was co-founded by Suchi Mukherjee. Suchi has a post-graduation degree from the London School of Economics. After her education, she joined Lehman Brothers followed by Virgin Media. She later joined eBay, where she was a Director of Skype before it was bought by Microsoft and until then was a part of eBay. Later Suchi worked as the Managing Director of Gumtree. While on maternity leave, she co-founded LimeRoad, which has become a successful online fashion brand in India and also received a funding of $20 million. In 2016, she was awarded the NDTV Unicorn Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
